چکیده

Many pathological changes in the retina which give rise to visual deterioration are caused by circulatory disturbances. A number of vaso-active substances have been suggested for the treatment of these disorders in an attempt to increase the flow of blood through the eye. One such substance is papaverine which has been used in the management of acute occlusions of the central retinal artery (Varley, Holt-Wilson, and Watson, I968, Gombos, 1970) and in chronic ischaemic conditions of the choroid and retina, when it has been given by arterial, venous, oral, and retrobulbar routes. Little effort, however, has been made to investigate the action of papaverine on the retinal blood vessels, and, apart from observations by several authors on its dilating effects (Frayser and Hichkam, I965; de Rivas Cherif, I967; Zahn, i966), no quantitative assessment or analysis of the responsc of the retinal circulation to papaverine infusions has yet been reported. The present experiments were designed to measure the effect of both local and systemic administration of papaverine on the retinal blood flow, so that an appraisal of its possible value in the management of retinal vascular disease can be made.

Effects of vasodilators on microcirculation of the rat cremaster muscle: a microscopic method for screening drugs.

Effects of vasodilating drugs on microcirculation of the rat cremaster muscle were investigated microscopically. Topical application and intravenous injection of papaverine produced dilatation of arterioles. Cyclandelate applied topically dilated the arterioles to a considerable extent. Topical application of bamethan induced arteriolar dilatation while bamethan given intravenously constricted ...

Invasive assessment of the coronary microcirculation using the index of microcirculatory resistance: description and validation of an animal model.

INTRODUCTION The index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR) enables/provides quantitative, invasive, and real-time assessment of coronary microcirculation status. AIMS The primary aim of this study was to validate the assessment of IMR in a large animal model, and the secondary aim was to compare two doses of intracoronary papaverine, 5 and 10 mg, for induction of maximal hyperemia and its ev...

The Effects of Vaccinium myrtillus Extract on Hamster Pial Microcirculation during Hypoperfusion-Reperfusion Injury

INTRODUCTION The present study was aimed to assess the in vivo hamster pial microvessel alterations due to 30 min transient bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) and reperfusion (60 min); moreover, the neuroprotective effects of Vaccinium myrtillus extract, containing 34.7% of anthocyanins, were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two groups of male hamsters were used: the first f...

Dose-related effects of adenosine and bradykinin on microvascular permselectivity to macromolecules in the hamster cheek pouch.

The hamster cheek pouch preparation was used to assess microvascular permselectivity responses to three vasodilating agents: bradykinin, adenosine, and papaverine. Fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran 150 was injected intravenously as a macromolecular tracer. To quantify changes in permeability, we calculated fluorochrome clearance values from the ratio of suffusate to plasma fluorescein isothioc...

The effect of NO donors on bovine retinal small arteries and posterior ciliary arteries.

PURPOSE This study was designed to investigate the effect of nitric oxide (NO) donors on isolated bovine retinal and ciliary arteries. METHODS Bovine retinal and short posterior ciliary arteries were mounted on a dual-wire myograph for isometric tension recordings. The relaxation induced by increasing concentrations of the following NO donors was compared: 0.1 nM to 10 microM nitroglycerin, 0...
